Ar Rahman: A Legend In The Making

Legendary musical souls won’t sue us if we give away their hard earned titles of musical excellence to him! He is Bollywood’s very own Beethoven and is often accredited as the Madras Mozart. He is the one and only, AR Rahman! In fact he’s the man of the hour or shall I say the musical-maestro-of-the-hour for he has won, NOT JUST one but TWO Awards for his musical composition in 'Slumdog Millionaire' at the Oscars. Rahman has created history by scooping two Oscar awards for the Best Original score and the Best Original song for “Slumdog Millionaire.” The award for the Best Song ‘Jai Ho’ was shared by Rahman and renowned lyricist Gulzar. The genius earlier has been honoured for his best original score at the Golden Globes. Even at the Critics Choice Awards, AR Rahamn bagged the award of the Best Composer.

Birth of a Star…Born as AS Dileep Kumar, Rahman’s musical journey began at a very early age. Since school days he was quite a musical kid. He took up a part-time job as a keyboard player and even participated in rock bands.

At a very young age (11) AR Rahman joined the famous music director Ilayaraja’s troupe as a keyboardist. Like any other kid he craved for more or shall I say his musical cells were vying for more! Rahman was simultaneously playing for other music directors. Not to forget he even accompanied musical maestros - Zakir Hussain, L Vaidyanathan and Ramesh Naidu for world tours (that too at such a young age, can you beat that!) Rahman is known for creating new sounds and illustrating the distinctly rich aspects of music. He started his career by composing jingles for commercials and composing music for television programmes and documentaries.

And then came the Big Break! It was Mani Ratnam’s - hit gross seller - Roja that marked celebrity Rahman’s entry into the world of cinema. The music of Roja was topping the chart busters. Rahman bagged the Indian National Award for the Best Music Composer, the first time ever by a debutant.

And then there was no looking back..After giving a major score of hit music for Kollywood - Thiruda Thiruda, Kaadhalan, Bombay and Minssara Kannavu- he also became the musical big daddy of B’wood! With Rangeela he nailed it followed by Dil Se, Taal, Pukar, Lagaan , Zubeida, Meenaxi, Yuva, Swades! (Phew)

A talent like him, who wouldn’t like to savour the flavour of his music! His musical platter also had the pinch of the crossover taste! Yes, with, Shekhar Kapoor’s Elizabeth - The Golden Age, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams and Danny’s Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman has earned it big time in Hollywood!

So what’s next? Planning to take over the world! We bet that won’t be a tough thing for you Rahman.

Octan Entertainment hereby wishes this musical genius a very heartiest congratulations for his recent honors especially at the Oscars…
